Strictly speaking La Défense is an area spanning three communities to the north of Paris - Puteaux, Corbevoie and Nanterre. It holds the headquarter for many large companies such as GdF and Nexity and provides a large modern shopping centre. It is also a large open-air museum.

Araignée Rouge or the great red Stabile was created by Alexander Calder in 1974 and placed in the sector La Défense 4 in 1976.

The bird column by Claude Torricini can be found on the ground floor of Les 4 Temps shopping centre among large trees and other plants. Claude Torricini created her sculpture of a tucan in 1980, using mahagony wood.
Due to its size and location it is the focus of the area.

Large bronze statue of a man without arms at La Défense, close to the back entrance to the CNIT.
Colosse (Colossus) by Igor Mitoraj was installed at La Défense in 2001. This sculpture, as many others of the artist, shows imperfection. Most of the arms and the back of his head are missing. The remainder of the body is very toned. At the back of his left thigh is a window with a head.

La Défense de Paris represents the courage of the people during the siege of 1870 - 1871 and it is after this statue that the area takes its name.
